At Least 14 Dead in Texas, Louisiana Following Hurricane Laura

Hurricane Laura has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 14 people. A family of five died in Louisiana from carbon monoxide poisoning by a gas-powered emergency generator. Four others passed after being hit by falling trees. One more person died from drowning. In Texas, a man died after a tree fell on his home and three other people lost their lives also as a result of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. As of this weekend, more than 400,000 people were without power and 200,000 without water. It’s estimated around 8,000 homes were also destroyed between the two states. President Trump visited the most affected areas over the weekend and said “One thing I know about this state, it rebuilds fast.” He added that it “could have been a lot worse.”  The water damage done was less than anticipated, as was the number of casualties. The emergency response to the storm was also tremendous, according to FEMA. The monetary cost of the damage done is predicted to be about $40 billion.
