Over 3,000 gallons of Diesel Fuel Spilled into Charleston Marsh

3,100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Charleston marsh over the weekend. The spill, which occurred at the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant on James Island, is believed to have been caused by an above-ground tank. Officials estimate that 20% of the fuel was spilled on land and 80% in the water. The land portion has been cleaned but crews continue to work on the marsh. The U.S. Coast Guard and DHEC are both on scene. It’s believed it could take up to a week to clear the entire area.
