Hurricane Isaias Negatively Impacts Local Sea Turtle Nests
The storm surge and dune erosion that resulted from hurricane Isaias had negative impacts on local wildlife. The storm hit just three to four weeks into sea turtle hatchling season, meaning nests hadn’t emerged yet. Over 100 dead sea turtle hatchlings were found in North Myrtle Beach. Garden City reported losing at least three nests. The Myrtle Beach State Park has also lost at least three out of 15 nests. While volunteers have continued their search efforts by digging in the sand, Park Ranger Ann Wilson said, “I don’t think they’re going to be found unless a miracle happens”. Wilson added one major impact you can make to help is picking up trash, filling in holes with sand, smashing sand castles before you leave, and turning off lights.
