Remains Found in Search for Marines Who Went Missing During AAV Training Session

The missing amphibious assault vehicle that sank off the southern California coast has been found with human remains inside. 15 marines and one sailor from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based out of Camp Pendleton near San Diego, were headed back to their ship after a training session late last week when the vehicle sank. Of the sixteen service members aboard, one marine died and two others were seriously injured. Eight marines were still missing and presumed dead after over forty hours of searching turned up nothing. The rescue mission was officially called off over the weekend. Then yesterday, the landing craft was finally discovered in 385 feet of water off the coast of San Clemente Island. The Navy Undersea Rescue Command confirmed remains were also found along with it. Now they are working to recover the bodies as well as the assault vehicle from the sea floor as quickly as possible. The cause of the incident has yet to be determined.
