Arizona Bridge Collapses After Train Derails, Catches Fire

A bridge above a lake in Arizona has partially collapsed after a freight train derailed and caught fire yesterday. It’s reported a Union Pacific train traveling from Phoenix to Tucson derailed in Tempe which led about ten train cars to catch fire. It has been described as a four alarm event. The south side of the bridge also collapsed as a result and sent rail cars to fall “into an empty park below”. No fatalities were recorded, however it’s believed one person suffered from smoke inhalation. A fire fighter was also treated for dehydration. When responders arrived, their initial plan of action was to contain the fire and prevent further spread to other cars. Once that had been achieved, they moved onto containing a leakage of hazardous materials from one of the damage cars. State environmental officials monitoring the situation have determined there is “no imminent hazard” but residents have been urged to avoid the area. The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the cause of the crash.
