Maine Woman Killed in Rare Shark Attack

A woman was killed in an apparent shark attack yesterday in what’s believed to be Maine’s first ever fatal incident. The victim, whose identity remains unknown pending notification of family, is believed to have been swimming off the shore of Bailey Island when she was injured. A witness reported that the victim appeared to have been attacked by a shark. Shortly after kayakers brought the victim to shore, EMS responders pronounced her dead. The Maine Marine Patrol is now investigating the incident. For the time being, swimmers and boaters are urged to use caution and asked to avoid swimming in the area, especially near schooling fish or seals. Shark attacks are extremely rare in Maine with the only other reported unprovoked attack occurring in 2010. A commercial diver was uninjured after an encounter with a porbeagle shark while working in the Bay of Fundy. It’s believed the shark mistook the diver’s camera for food.
