Woman Remains on Darlington City Council Following “Racially Charged Incident”
The Darlington City Council announced they can not remove a councilwoman following an alleged racially charged incident. It’s believed Councilwoman Sheila Baccus and an officer got into a confrontation over a parking ticket back in June. Baccus allegedly told the officer to “take your white self back to the white neighborhood…you’re probably the kind that would shoot us in the back.” Following a two hour long meeting, the council ultimately decided they do not have the authority to remove someone from office. The city’s mayor now intends to send the incident to the city attorney for further review by the ethics board and Governor Henry McMaster. Baccus was present at the meeting but did not speak.
