Ghislaine Maxwell’s Bail Hearing Set For Today
Almost two weeks after her arrest, Ghislaine Maxwell is expected to appear in court for her bail hearing. The 58-year-old ex-girlfriend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was arrested July 2nd on charges of trafficking minors as young as fourteen for Epstein. Maxwell’s lawyers said she is not a flight risk and have asked for a release bail of $5 million due to the “serious risk” coronavirus poses within prisons right now. Her proposed bail conditions would require her to surrender numerous passports and confine herself to a property in New York with GPS monitoring. However, U.S. federal prosecutors believe she is an “extreme risk of flight” due to the fact that she is wealthy, with multiple passports, skilled at hiding, and is facing a daunting maximum prison sentence of 35 years. It was also revealed prior to her arrest, she attempted to evade FBI agents, going so far as to wrap her phone in tin foil in order to avoid detection.
