World Health Organization Officially Notified of U.S. Withdrawal
Yesterday, the Trump Administration notified Congress and the United Nations it intends to withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization. This comes as COVID-19 cases globally nears 12 million with almost 550,000 deaths. President Trump first announced his intentions back in mid-April. He believes the organization “failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms” in regards to the pandemic. The WHO is currently processing the request which will go into effect a year from now, July 6th 2021, if “conditions for such withdrawal are met.” Said conditions include “giving a one-year notice and fully meeting the payment of assessed financial obligations.” The move has proven to be extremely controversial among many. Upon hearing the news, Democratic Senator Robert Menendez tweeted “To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic and incoherent doesn’t do it justice. This won’t protect American lives or interests.” Former Vice President Joe Biden has vowed on “his first day in office” to reverse the decision.
