Myrtle Beach Allocating More Funds to Police Department

Amid calls nationwide to defund the police, Myrtle Beach leaders have decided to increase their force’s budget. The city council made the decision yesterday as part of the second and final reading for the 2020-2021 fiscal year’s budget. Approximately $62,000 more dollars will be allocated to the city’s police force. Ten more officers will also be added thanks to a grant. Mayor Brenda Bethune said Myrtle Beach is different due to the influx in visitors the city receives each year and these changes will be key to not only maintaining, but also increasing public safety.
