Minneapolis City Council to “Dismantle” Police Force in Wake of George Floyd’s Death
Today officially marks two weeks since the death of George Floyd and protests show no signs of slowing down across the country. The majority of protests this weekend were attended by thousands and their major demands are to defund or abolish the police. In Minneapolis, they may do so. The Minneapolis City Council announced yesterday they intend to not only defund their current force, but dismantle it as well in favor of a “new model of public safety”. Mayor Jacob Frey received backlash for saying he does not support the idea. However, the council has a veto-proof super-majority and will be able to push it through regardless of how he feels about it. Meanwhile, Derek Chauvin is expected to make his first court appearance today remotely via video. It’s believed the defense of at least two of the rookie officers involved in Floyd’s death will be to place blame entirely on Chauvin. Also today in Houston, thousands are expected to gather for a six-hour long viewing, followed by Floyd’s funeral. His burial is scheduled to take place tomorrow.
