Minneapolis Riots Update: One Officer in Custody for Death of George Floyd
BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: This afternoon it was announced that former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and is now in custody. He has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
Minneapolis has declared a state of emergency following last nights riots over the death of George Floyd. Protesters stormed the city’s 3rd Police Precinct, which was closest to the area where 46-year-old Floyd died, and set the building ablaze. The officers and other staff evacuated earlier and no one was injured. It’s reported more than 170 businesses have been looted, damaged, or set on fire. 500 National Guard soldiers have been officially deployed and placed strategically throughout the city in order to protect key locations such as pharmacies and grocery stores. It’s recently been revealed Officer Derek Chauvin, who was the one seen pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck, had 18 complaints filed against him during his 19-year career with the department. The other officer seen in the video, Tou Thao, also had six complaints filed, one of which was still opened. The details surrounding the complaints were not made available, however the majority of cases were closed “without discipline.”
