Tensions Increase Over Mail-In Voting As 2020 Election Approaches
As the pandemic continues and the 2020 election approaches, vote-by-mail has become a huge issue. In Texas, an appeals court has temporarily suspended the decision by a federal judge to allow everyone afraid of contracting COVID-19 or those with weakened immune systems to vote by mail. President Trump also openly threatened to withhold funding from Michigan and Nevada as they announced plans for widespread mail-in voting. He claims they enacted their policies illegally and will be extremely susceptible to fraud. In response to the president’s threats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reminded everyone of the $3.6 billion vote-by-mail proposal included in the next stimulus bill. She said mail-in voting is a major health issue and necessary. As an added benefit, it also helps support the U.S. Postal Service. It’s an industry Democrats have been attempting to financially assist during the outbreak but so far failed to do so.
