Armed Protesters Surround Michigan’s Capital as State of Emergency Extended Another Month

Hundreds of armed protesters stormed Michigan’s capital building yesterday afternoon. Many of the protesters strongly oppose the stay at home restrictions. They also believe governor Gretchen Whitmer’s recent actions are oppressive and that she is “overstepping her authorities”. They demanded an end to Michigan’s current disaster declaration and state of emergency which were expected to expire at midnight last night after multiple extensions. Michigan’s House and Senate were attempting to pass a bill which would limit Governor Whitmer’s powers in order to appease protesters. But despite the obvious and strong opposition, she was still able to override them. She ended the existing disaster declaration and state of emergency, then immediately signed a “1940s-era state law” which granted her authority to keep Michigan under state of emergency through May 28th.
