Slemmons, Barton
Dr. Barton Kent Slemmons, 82, of Pinehurst, NC; passed Sunday July 10, 2011 at his residence. Dr. Slemmons was born January 5, 1929 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to the late Senn and Margaret (Henry) Slemmons. Dr. Slemmons served his country in the US Navy for 31 years, including as Commanding Officer of the 3rd Medical Battalion 3rd Marine Division based out of Camp Lejeune during the Vietnam War. He achieved the rank of Captain and served two tours at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC. and went on to become the Chief of Orthopedics at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Slemmons later worked as professor of Orthopedics at the University of Missouri Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Slemmons was an avid golfer his entire life and continued his passion for the game after retirement to the Pinehurst area in 1986. Dr. Slemmons is survived by his wife of sixty years, Arlene (Provost) Slemmons, four sons, Steven Slemmons and wife Shannon of Birmingham, AL; Kirby Slemmons and wife Sandra of Orange Park, FL; Kent Slemmons and wife Cindy of Birmingham, AL; Jeff Slemmons of Germantown, MD; a daughter, Jane Albert and husband Tom of Ellicott City, MD, a brother, Daniel Slemmons and wife Marilyn of Escondido, CA; a sister, Ann Bauder and husband Merl of Johnson City, TN; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren and one step-great great grandchild. A memorial service will be held 11AM Friday July 15th 2011 at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst.
