Owens, Mary Lee Smith

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4 KJV Mrs. Mary Lee Smith Owens, was born on November 28, 1929 in Florence, South Carolina to Thomas and Adaline Scott Smith. On Monday, June 13, 2011, she received her summons and entered into eternal rest. “Mildred”, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, attended old Wilson School on Athens Street in Florence, SC. She was employed as a cook at Carver Elementary School and Honorage Nursing Center. She was a member of Open Door Missionary Baptist Church, Florence, SC. “Mildred” was married to James Owens and to this union one child was born, Joyce Owens. In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter, she was preceded in death by her common law husband, J. C. Gee; two brothers, Lenyard Smith and Thomas Smith; and one sister, Dorothy Smith Robertson. Left to cherish her memories are: one brother, JC (Ethel) Smith of Florence, SC; two nephews, Lindsey (Vernessa) Robertson and Willie J. Smith, Jr. of Florence, SC; six nieces, Geraldine Cheek, Gloria Glenn, Jennifer (Ron) Johnson, Sonora (Rev. Waymon) Mumford, all of Florence, SC; Penelope (Joe) McEachin of Columbia, SC and Deloris Dancy of Philadelphia, PA; one brother-in-law, Cody (Mildred) Gee of New York; one sister-in-law, Betty Gee of Florence, SC; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
