Zorn, Mary Helen

Mary Helen Zorn, 88, died April 24, 2011 peacefully in Pinehurst after a period of decline. Mary Helen was born on June 22, 1922 in Elyria, Ohio to James H. Simpson and Gladys Carpenter Simpson. Mary Helen grew up in Elyria, graduating from Elyria High School. She attended Oberlin College where she graduated in 1944. She served in the American Red Cross in the Philippines as a recreation worker. While serving in Manilla, she met her husband, Roger. The couple returned to the States and married in 1948. They raised a family beginning in Hudson, New York with the birth of their daughter, Susan in 1951, followed by a son, Bill in 1953 and a son Bob in 1960. Mary Helen and Roger resided in Lexington, Massachusetts from 1959 to 1990. Mary Helen was active as a teachers aide and volunteer in the Lexington school system. In 1990, they retired to Pinehurst, North Carolina. She was a cancer survivor and held her family dear. She enjoyed her time with her two sisters, Shirley Jerauld and Virginia Ruth and her two brothers, James Simpson and Robert Simpson, and treasured her time with her children and grandchildren, taking great pride in their accomplishments. Mary Helen and Roger enjoyed golfing, bridge, watching hockey, and she was an avid reader. Mary Helen is survived by two sons, William Van Allen Zorn of Hooksett, New Hampshire and Robert James Zorn of Bigelow, Arkansas, four grandchildren, Valerie Uhte, Stephanie Uhte, Alexander Van Allen Zorn and Tyler Burke Zorn. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Zorn and her daughter-in-law, Brenda Zorn. A memorial service will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm. The family suggests memorial contributions, if desired, be made to a charity of their own choice.
