Baker, Dorothy Nell
COWARD – Ms. Dorothy Nell “Dot” Smith Baker, 72, passed away peacefully March 21st, 2011 in her home after a long, hard-fought, and brave battle with cancer. Mrs. Baker was born in Florence on November 5th, 1938. She was a daughter of the late Afton Smith and Valarie Grey Smith of Coward, and was the widow of the late Lawrence Pete McDonald of Florence. Mrs. Baker was a homemaker, seamstress and loved to cook for her family and friends. She was tough to beat at a game of rummy, a favorite pastime of hers. Mrs. Baker was deeply loved and will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved her. The family extends a special “thank you” to her hospice nurse, Heather Matthews, and social worker, Leah Howell, for all of their help and support during Mrs. Baker‘s times of need. Surviving to cherish Mrs. Baker‘s memories are her two children, Wanda (Steve) Locklair, of Coward, and Ervin (Teresa) McDonald, of Coward; her two sisters, Shirley (Ralph) Wise and Brenda (Kenny) Crawford, both of Ladson; her brother Jimmy (Magalene) Smith, of Coward; her brother-in-law, Elmer Hutchinson, of Summerville; her seven grandchildren; Renee (Jack) Matthews, Scott (Karen) McDonald, Tonya McDonald Rourk, Deanna (Eric) Powell, Steve (Ashley) Locklair, Meike McDonald, and Michael Locklair; her seven great-grandchildren who called her “Nanny”; Shannon (Will) Thomas, Jozie (Fernando) Flowers, Beth Flowers, Nicholas Stevens, Ethan Locklair, Landri McDonald, and Logan McDonald; her two great-great-grand children, Mia and Spencer Stevens, of Coward; and her loving and compassionate caregivers and cherished friends, Tammy Matthews, Harry Lee “Doody” Matthews, of Coward and Nelson Weatherford, of Summerville. Mrs. Baker is preceded in death by her two sisters, Betty Hutchinson, of Summerville, and Carolyn Lynch, of Scranton. The family of Mrs. Baker will have calling hours from six until eight o‘clock p.m., Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mrs. Baker will be held at three o‘clock, Thursday, March 24th, 2011 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the funeral services in Mossy Grove Cemetery in Coward. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.
