Rannow, Jane Stanton

Jane Stanton Rannow, 96, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 at her home in Pinehurst. She was born September 3, 1914 in New York City, daughter of H. Sumner and Beatrice Sternberg. Mrs. Rannow was a graduate of the Dalton School and Grand Central School of Art. In 1935 she married Lewis P. Stanton and lived in Harrison and Scarsdale, New York while raising her family. After her husband‘s death in 1957, she moved to Larchmont, New York, and married Robert L. Rannow in 1959. They divided their time between Vermont and North Carolina before taking up permanent residence in Pinehurst in the mid 1980‘s. She was a member of the Scarsdale Congregational Church, the Scarsdale Women‘s Club, and a number of other community and civic groups. She had a life-long interest in sports and was an excellent golfer, tennis player, and was a North Carolina champion table tennis player in her age group. She was an avid skier and enjoyed skiing with her husband in Vermont and at many of the major ski resorts in this country and Canada. She was a member of the Stratton Mountain Country Club in Vermont and the Pinehurst Country Club. She is also a member of the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Rannow was a devoted mother and grandmother and was always planning the next family holiday gathering. A renowned hostess, she regularly entertained a dozen or more friends at dinner parties at her home. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert L. Rannow of Pinehurst; her daughter, Elizabeth S. Bartlett and her husband Frederick of Brunswick, Maine and their children Jeffrey and his wife Kirsten of Columbus, Ohio, Frederick II of Harwich, Massachusetts, and Robert Reed of Brunswick, Maine; her daughter, Linda S. Maynard and her husband Frank of West Lebanon, New Hampshire and Cary, and their children Fran III and his wife Cicely of Durham, and Cynthia Ward and her husband Christopher of Elkridge, Maryland. She is also survived by grandchildren Megan Roberts of Brooklyn, New York and John Garrison of Colorado, six great-grandchildren, and two nieces, Barbara Wells of Vashon Island, Washington and Margaret Wells of New York, New York. She was predeceased by her first husband of 22 years, Lewis, her son Frederick L. Stanton of California, and her sister, Shirley Sharaf, of Rockport, Massachusetts. Her life can be summed up very simply. She was a terrific mother to three children and a world class wife to two husbands. What more can you say? Funeral services are private.
