Stiefel Jr, Albert

Mr. Stiefel, 92, died March 15, 2011, in Florence. He was born June 13, 1918, in Jersey City, NJ, to the late Albert H. and Margaret Caroline Vogt Stiefel. Al met his beautiful wife of 64 years, Betty, when they both worked at Union Carbide Corp. in New York City. He served in the Pacific during WWII (1943-1946) as a sergeant in the Army‘s 240th Engineers Construction Battalion. Al and his family moved to Florence in 1966 to open the new Union Carbide Linde Welding Products Plant and retired in 1980 after 46 years with UCC. In his youth and adult years he was a baseball player and avid bowler. After moving to Florence he took up golf and enjoyed playing at Oakdale CC and other area courses. His bookshelf is lined with trophies and trinkets from his many sporting efforts. Al was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Oakdale Country Club. He and Betty volunteered at the Manna House. His retirement was filled with golf, travel and visits with his family. Survivors include: daughters, Linda Westbrook of Florence, and Barbara (Edward) Vandegrift of Wellsboro, PA; sons, Robert Stiefel of Pompano Beach, FL, and William Stiefel of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Ronald (Laura) Westbrook, Wendy (Robert) Ahearn, Keith (Angie) Vandegrift, and Stephanie (Jeremy) Sprouse; great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Andrew, Nathan, Kaitlyn, Robert, Gabriel, and Lillian. A graveside service for Mr. Albert Herman Stiefel, husband of the late Grace Elizabeth Stiefel will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Florence Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday at Cain Funeral Home.
