New Law Requires S.C. Restaurants To Disclose Imported Shrimp

The law comes after several Lowcountry restaurants were accused of advertising imported shrimp as local. That became known as "Shrimp Gate."

A new law took effect in South Carolina this week.

Restaurants in the state that serve imported shrimp are now required to post a notice on their menu or on a sign at the main entrance.

The notice must state “some items may contain foreign imported shrimp.” It must also advice customers to ask for more information. Restaurants who fail to follow the law may face fines following a short grace period.
