Myrtle Beach City Council Approves First Reading For Surf Park

The park would feature a nearly six-acre surf lagoon, a 150-room hotel and 20,000 square feet of food, retail and tourism space.

Myrtle Beach City Council members have approved a new surf park.

The council approved the first reading of an ordinance for the proposed $150 million surf park and hospitality development, which includes up to $20 million in city incentives.

It would be situated at the former Palace Theater site near Broadway at the Beach. It will feature a nearly six-acre surf lagoon, a 150-room hotel and 20,000 square feet of food, retail and tourism space.

Under the agreement, the city would not disburse the funding until the project reaches at least 80% completion.

Council members also approved a resolution expressing support for the surf park project and asked that it be included in an existing multi-county business park.

The ordinance must pass a second reading by city council before taking effect.
