Man Identified In Deputy-Involved Fatal Shooting

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Lake City Highway near Johnsonville with intentions to serve an arrest warrant.

A man has died following a deputy-involved shooting in Florence County.

On Wednesday, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Lake City Highway near Johnsonville with intentions to serve an arrest warrant.

40-year-old Nelson Chavis reportedly failed to stop prompting a police chase that continued into Williamsburg County. There, he got out of his vehicle and fled into the woods near Muddy Creek Road.

Chavis reportedly was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with deputies. He was shot and died while en route to a hospital.

No officers were injured in the incident. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is now investigating the shooting.
