Canada Tariffs On U.S. Goods Take Effect

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the move is retaliation for the 50% tariffs President Trump slapped on Canadian goods last month.

On Tuesday, Canada has hit the United States with major tariffs.

The escalating trade war comes after both sides failed to work out a new agreement. Canada’s counter tariffs will target nearly $30 billion worth of U.S. goods. Prices are expected to rise on American items coming into Canada such as steel and dairy products.

Carney has shown no signs of backing down. He said he is in no rush to return to trade talks. Instead, he is focused on diversifying Canada’s trade and expanding its domestic economy.
