Stone, Alton

SCRANTON: Mr. Alton D. “Torre” Stone, 81, husband of Evelene Powell Stone, died Sunday, February 27, 2011, at Carolinas Hospital, Florence, after an illness. Mr. Stone was born on July 25, 1929, in Florence County, a son of the late Eldridge Stone and Essie McKnight Stone. He retired from Florence County Public Works and was a member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Stone was an avid sportsman and enjoyed a long-time association with slow-pitch softball. Surviving are: His wife, Evelene P. Stone of Scranton; sons, Derrell Stone of Myrtle Beach, Ronnie Stone and his wife, Norma of Darlington and Tony M. Stone and his wife, Pam of Effingham; grandchildren, Shannon Glen, Christy Welch, Rodney Stone and Casey Stone; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Laverne Stone and his wife, Williahmenia of Lake City. Mr. Stone was predeceased by three children, Evelene Marie Stone, Kenard Headly Stone and Karen Rozella Stone; grandson, Anthony Stone; brother, Oneal Stone and a sister, Connie Ruth Horne. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at 3:00 P.M. at St. John Free Will Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery directed by Carolina Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, February 28th, at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 E. Highway 378 ByPass, Scranton.
