Are Superfoods Really a Thing?
Experts say the term "superfoods" was originally coined as a marketing strategy?
They’re called superfoods…items that are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants…but did you know that experts say the term “superfoods” was originally coined as a marketing strategy?
Registered dietitian Julia Zumpano with Cleveland Clinic says there’s no scientific backing that deems a specific food as “super” and to be wary of packaged foods marketed as super-foods. But, she says the hype around nutrient-dense, whole-foods, is legit. Instead of shelling out dough for a food deemed super, choose a variety of items within each whole-foods group.
For instance, blueberries are called a super-food…but other berries are healthy, too. She says to go with ones that are affordable and easy to find. Same with leafy greens…if you don’t like kale, go for something else that’s in season.
