Judge Dismisses Alex Murdaugh’s Lawsuit Against Becky Hill

A judge ruled that Hill's actions were not the reason Murdaugh spent $600,000 in legal fees during his initial prosecution.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh against the former clerk of court for Colleton County.

In May, Murdaugh sued Becky Hill. Her improper interactions with the jury in Murdaugh’s 2023 trial led to his murder convictions being overturned earlier this year.

Murdaugh will get a new trial in the 2021 killings of his wife and son. However, a judge ruled Wednesday that Hill’s actions were not the reason Murdaugh spent $600,000 in legal fees during his initial prosecution.

Attorneys for Hill said they were “very pleased” with the ruling. Murdaugh’s legal team has filed a notice of appeal and declined to comment.

Murdaugh’s next hearing in his retrial for the murders is set for next week. He remains in prison after pleading guilty to dozens of state and federal financial crimes.
