James Herbert Burns, 87, died suddenly on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born on July 18, 1923 in Wadesboro, NC, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Ruth Graves Burns. Herbert graduated from Wadesboro High School, Class of 1941 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was part owner and operator of Royal Tire Service, Inc. A volunteer fireman for over 30 years, Herbert served as Assistant Chief for ten years, Chief for 12 years and President of the Sandhill Fireman’s Association in 1967. He helped organize and was a Charter Member of the first Anson Rescue Squad and was first aid instructor for the squad, a member of the Lions Club, serving as President and Zone Chairman, member of the Civilian Club, the Kilwining Lodge No. 64 AF & AM and Woodmen of the World Lodge No. 4. He was selected by the Junior Chamber of Commerce as Young Man of the Year in 1957, served as Wadesboro City Manager from 1969 to 1977, retired and moved to North Myrtle Beach in 1977. Herbert was an avid gardener and fisherman, leasing the Holiday Inn Fishing Pier in North Myrtle Beach and operating it until it was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Herbert served as Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Wadesboro and later transferred his membership to Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, after moving to North Myrtle Beach. Herbert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Norma Campbell Burns of North Myrtle Beach; one son, James H. Burns, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Wadesboro, NC; two daughters, Kathryn Manos and her husband Mike of Columbia, SC, Myra Kinsella and her husband Terry of North Myrtle Beach; one brother, T.D. Burns and his wife Jean of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren, David, Stan and Chad Burns, Nick and Andy Manos, Lynn Langeneck, Sean and Erin Kinsella and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, P.O.
