Horry County leaders will advance plans to expand the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
Officials say the detention center currently houses 848 inmates but could exceed its capacity in the coming years as the county continues to grow.
The proposed expansion includes a new 574-bed tower with dedicated space for inmates with mental health needs.
The county’s Public Safety Committee has approved a resolution to move forward with design and cost estimates for the project. It is expected to have a price tag of $130 million.
