Gaines, Elsie Matthews

Elsie Matthews Gaines, age 91 of Goldston went to be with the Lord on, Sunday, February 13, 2011. Mrs. Gaines was born on July 10, 1919 in Sanford, NC to the late Toy Carl Matthews and Sarah Baggett Matthews. She was a long-time member of Goldston Baptist Church where she was very involved and formerly served as a Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Gaines was a founding member of the Goldston Womens Club where she formerly served as a president and also in many other capacities. She also served as the President for the North Carolina State District Womens Club. She had a love for traveling in the US and abroad, especially the trip she and her husband took to the Holy Land. Mrs. Gaines was a homemaker who cherished, loved, and adored her family and friends. She enjoyed reading and cooking and was known for her famous chocolate pie. Mrs. Gaines is survived by her children: Daniel Gaines of Goldston, NC; Patricia DeLoach of Goldston, NC; Holland C. Gaines and wife Becky of Apex, NC; and Alan Gaines and wife Sharon of Chapel Hill, NC; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and lifelong dear friend, Omie Lynn Gaines; and her compassionate and loving caregivers who provided care for her following her husbands death: Becky Powers, Lillie Currie, Shelby Spence, Rosetta Oldham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, who she joined this Valentines Day, Holland B. Gaines; three sisters: Jimmie Phillips, Verlyn Fay Fagg, and Betty Jean Jennings. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Goldston Baptist Church with Rev. Mitch Roginsky and Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at the Goldston United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Goldston Baptist Church, PO Box 100, Goldston, NC 27252; or to The Baptist Children‘s Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
