New Racism in the Old South
As we stand in the very places where those who preceded us adamantly opposed minority rights and racial integration for most of our country‘s history, it is easy to marvel at the progress made toward a racially-equal society. Yet, in our quick survey of the landscape, we often overlook how our society is still plagued by racial discrepancies. Bigotry still exists, but in a form that is more covert, more indirect and less visible than it has been in times past. Jason Eastman, assistant professor of psychology and sociology at Coastal Carolina University, will discuss ways in which the new racism is just as powerful in maintaining the old ways of the South.
