GOP Led States Send National Guard Members To Nation’s Capital
The president has justified the move as an emergency response to crime and homelessness.
Three GOP-led states have sent hundreds of National Guard members to Washington D.C.
West Virginia plans to deploy 300 to 400 guard troops, South Carolina pledged 200, and Ohio is sending 150 in the coming days.
The move is on par with the Trump administration’s effort to overhaul policing in the nation’s capital to make is safe again.
The troops are being sent out as protesters push back on federal law enforcement and present troops following President Trump’s executive order.
The order federalizes local police forces and activated around 800 District of Columbia National Guard members.
The president has justified the move as an emergency response to crime and homelessness. City officials have noted that violent crime is lower than it was during Trump’s first term in office.
