MATTIE FRANCES WALLACE CARPENTER– Age 85 of Pinehurst, NC passed away on Wednesday, December 29th at her home in Quail Haven Village. Born in Rockingham, NC, she graduated as class of 1943 Salutatorian from Vass High School and from Kings Business College in Raleigh. Following graduation, she served as the Executive Assistant for Mr. Richard Tufts, President of Pinehurst, Inc. After marriage in 1952, she returned to Raleigh as a mother and homemaker. While her husband was in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and Florida State University, Mrs. Carpenter worked in various law offices and for the Florida State University Wesley Foundation. Known for her giving nature, she worked in a variety of volunteer positions. In the Scouting program, she served as a Den Mother, receiving a Distinguished Service Award from the Occoneechee Council, B.S.A. For many years, she served as a volunteer at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Following her husband‘s retirement from North Carolina State University in 1983, Professor and Mrs. Carpenter moved to the Carpenter family farm in Gaston County where she was active in Lander‘s Chapel United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, she was instrumental in the planning, opening and on-going maintenance of the Gaston County Historical Museum. Following her husband‘s death in 1998, she moved back to Pinehurst and settled in at the Quail Haven Village in 2004. She became an active member of the Doub‘s Chapel United Methodist Church. She is survived by her sons, Captain Stanley Dean MacDonald Carpenter and wife Linda of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Larry Alan Carpenter and wife Linda of Franklin, Tennessee and Charles Francis Carpenter and wife Heidi of Durham. She is also survived by her sister, Rita Whipple of Universal City, TX, and brother, John E. Wallace of Southern Pines and grandchildren, Christopher, Will, Samantha, Christy, Jeff, Craig, Si, and Sam. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Martin Wallace and Ella Magdalene Frye Wallace and by her husband, Dr. William Lester Carpenter. A memorial service for Mrs. Carpenter will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst on Tuesday, January 4th at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4:00PM before the service. A graveside service will be conducted 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 5, at Lander‘s Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Lincolnton, NC, where she will be interred beside her husband.
