IRS Finalizing Agreement To Give ICE Access To Confidential Information

The proposed data sharing arrangement would give ICE permission to submit names and addresses of suspected undocumented immigrants to the IRS.

The IRS is working to finalize an agreement that would allow ICE to access confidential taxpayer information.

The proposed data sharing arrangement would give ICE permission to submit names and addresses of suspected undocumented immigrants to the IRS in exchange for verification against tax records.

The goal is to locate undocumented immigrants targeted for deportation.

The draft agreement states that ICE’s access would be limited to confirming addresses of immigrants with final removal orders. It also would only apply to those suspected of violating immigration law.

Requests could only be submitted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem or acting ICE Director Todd Lyons.

The move would mark a significant shift in the agency’s policy that has traditionally kept tax-payer information strictly confidential.
