Trump Hosts Talks Via Phone With Russian Leader Putin
Russian leader Vladimir Putin rejected a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the war that Ukraine previously agreed to.
President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin hosted discussions via a phone call Tuesday.
Putin rejected a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the war that Ukraine previously agreed to. However, he responded positively to Trump’s proposal of a more limited 30-day ceasefire on energy facilities on both sides of the conflict.
Putin also laid down some steep demands for broader peace talks, such as the “complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv.” However, neither side mentioned any demands for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia.
The U.S. said negotiations on the broader ceasefire and peace deal will begin immediately in the Middle East.
In addition, both Putin and Trump expressed optimism about potential economic cooperation between the countries if peace is achieved.
President Trump will speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the phone Wednesday to discuss the situation.
