NFL Plans To Use New Technology For First Down Measurements

The NFL is planning to use some new technology for first down measurements for the upcoming season.
The Hawk-Eye virtual measurement will be used to determine the line to gain and it will be the primary method for measurements.
The Chain Gang, which has been the staple measuring method practically the entire lifetime of football, will now only be a secondary system to determine the distance.
Instead of bringing out the chains, the league will go with a “virtual measurement.” The system works with cameras inside the stadium that track players, officials and the ball.
After the ball is spotted, the system notifies officials if a first down was achieved.
The Hawk-Eye system underwent extensive testing last season and has been approved for real time use. However, if it does not prove to make the game more efficient, the league will get rid of it.
