S.C. Parents Urged To Check Child’s Information After Data Breach
The department is urging parents to check and see if their child has a credit report, which could be a sign of identity theft.
The South Carolina Department of Consumer affairs is reminding parents of ways to protect their children after last week’s Powerschool data breach. All state districts except for four were involved in the breach.
The department is urging parents to check and see if their child has a credit report, which could be a sign of identity theft. You can do that by contacting Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax for more information.
Parents are also advised to consider a protected consumer freeze, allowing you to create a credit file for your child and freeze it. That would prevent creditors from getting their child’s credit report. Requests can be made through the previous mentioned companies.
In addition, the department said to be cautious, adding that you will never receive a phone call, email, text or social media message from a government agency demanding money or personal information.
