President-elect Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to pause a law that could ban TikTok in the U.S..
The law warns that if the app’s parent company ByteDance does not sell TikTok, it will be barred from use in the U.S..
It comes after concerns that China is using the app to secure data and information from the American people as well as manipulate the content to shape U.S. opinion.
Opponents of the law claim federal judges so far have given too much deference to the U.S. government’s national security concerns and not enough consideration to freedom of expression.
TikTok is scheduled to be banned next month if Bytedance refuses to sell. However, Trump is set to take office on January 20, a day after the ban is set to be enforced.
Trump is asking the Supreme Court to pause the ban. He plans to work to find a way to “save” the popular video platform without compromising national security or American’s free speech rights.
