Rissel, Mary

FLORENCE, SC – Mary H. Rissel of Florence, South Carolina and Mount Vernon, Maine, Wednesday, died December 8, 2010, in a local hospital in Florence, SC. She was born in Skowhegan, Maine, the daughter of Fred T. Hurley, Sr. and Mary Mitchell Hurley. She attended the public schools in Skowhegan and graduated from Skowhegan High School in the Class of 1941. She continued her education at the University of Maine, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 1945. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Rissel married Martin Charles Rissel of Rutherford, New Jersey on June 29, 1946. The Rissels lived in Hallowell, Maine for over thirty years. During the early years of her marriage, Mrs. Rissel was a homemaker. She then entered the field of education and worked in various positions in MSAD #16. She retired in 1981 as the Special Education Teacher at HallDale High School in Farmingdale, Maine. For the next several years she served as the Training Coordinator with the consulting engineering firm of Wilbur Smith Associates at its Falls Church, Virginia office. In 1989 Mr. and Mrs. Rissel moved to Florence, South Carolina. Each year they spent the winter months in Florence and the summer months at their home in Mount Vernon, Maine. Mrs. Rissel was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and two sisters, and in 2005 by her husband of fifty-eight years, Martin Charles Rissel. She is survived by two sons, Daniel R. Rissel of Mount Vernon, Maine and Charles W. Rissel and his wife, Cynthia Branigan, of Titusville, NJ; one daughter, Linda Anne Maxfield, and her husband, David, of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Charles C. Rissel of Houston, Texas, Sean M. Rissel of San Marcos, Texas, and Deanna, Beverly, Roxanne and Gabrielle Maxfield of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a number of nieces and nephews. At Mrs. Rissel’s request, there will be no visiting hours of public Memorial Service. Following cremation, her cremains will be scattered at a location which she has selected.
