Chavis , Wilson

Mr. Wilson Chavis, 84, of the Prospect Community went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. He was born October 25, 1926 to the late Mr. Walter S. Chavis and Mrs. Flossie Bullard Chavis. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Mrs. Dora Lee McGirt Chavis; two brothers: Mr. Manassah Locklear and Mr. William C. Chavis. Mr. Chavis lived a life of love, care and service. He surrendered his life to Jesus Christ at the age of 17. Having made the most important decision of his life he was now ready for his career as a servant. In 1953, God led Mr. Wilson to help establish Island Grove Baptist Church where he has served for the past 57 years. God blessed him to serve as Sunday School teacher, Stewardship Chairman, Deacon, Burnt Swamp Associational Executive Board Member and Union Meeting Moderator. Mr. Chavis graduated from Pembroke State College in 1947 and he was one of the first 500 students to graduate from the college. His teaching career began at East Carolina High School in Clinton, NC and concluded with the Public Schools of Hoke County. He served as 5th grade math teacher, girls basketball coach and Assistant Principal during his 31 years. Mr. Chavis lived a rich and full life trusting in one verse-“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28. The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010, at Island Grove Baptist Church with the Revs: Larry Locklear, Grady Chavis and Gary Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in the Island Grove Memorial Park. Mr. Chavis leaves to cherish his memory: his wife: Mrs. Doris Chavis of the home; a son: Mr. Ronnie and wife: Mrs. Sherry Chavis; a daughter: Mrs. Lanette and husband: Mr. Robert Locklear; two brothers: Mr. Dosey and wife: Mrs. Phyllis Chavis of Lumberton and Mr. Grady and wife: Mrs. Cynthia Chavis of Pembroke; a sister: Mrs. Mary Francis Butler of Pembroke; his god-mother: Mrs. Sudie Brewington of Clinton; two special sisters-in-law: Mrs. Clara Chavis and Ms. Shirley Chavis; five grandchildren: Mr. Robert Kent Locklear, Ms. Misty Locklear, Ms. Elizabeth Karrington Locklear, Mrs. Beth Chavis Locklear and Mr. William Ryan Chavis; seven great-grandchildren: J.R. Locklear, Dora Le-Anne Locklear, Camden Dial, Niyah Chavis, Jaythan Locklear, Jacob Chavis and Rylee Chavis. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2010, at Island Grove Baptist Church.
