Mumford, McKever

Mr. McKever “Johnny” Mumford passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25, 2010 at MUSC in Charleston, SC, after an illness. The son of Cecil and Ruby Lee Alexander Mumford, he was born on July 21, 1946 in Florence County. On April 17, 1971, McKever married Patricia Ann Johnson. To this union five children were born upon which one child died at birth. Mr. Mumford was employed with La-Z-Boy for 34 years until he retired. He attended the public schools of Florence County. McKever joined Maxwell Baptist Church at an early age. He was a proud member of the Mt. Pisgah Masonic Lodge #437. McKever, who was affectionately called “Johnny”, carried out his God given duty as a husband and father. He passionately provided for his wife, his children and gave unselfishly to others. McKever’s giving and kind heart also extended into his community. He was a “jack of all trades” whether you needed electrical, mechanical help or just simply needed help, you could just call him and he would eagerly be there to help. He was an avid lover of sports, especially baseball. He was an active participant of the “Progressive Baseball League.” Early on, he played with the “Rocky Flyers” baseball team. “Johnny” was also a Master Chef, who was known for his chicken bog, ribs, chicken, pork-skins and his delicious homemade Bar-b-cue sauce. He was also a member of the Simply Devine Savings Club, M&W Savings Club and The Northside Breakfast Club where they would provide meals to the senior citizens every Saturday before Thanksgiving Day which was later carried out by the Mt. Pisgah Masonic Lodge #437. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonya Denise Mumford; two brothers, Evan Mays, Cecil Mumford, Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Mumford and Doris Mumford. Survivors include: his loving wife of 39 years, Patricia Ann Johnson Mumford; two sons, Kelvin Mumford and Torrez A. Mumford; one daughter, LaKeshia M. Mumford, all of Florence, SC; two grandsons, Danquez K. Mumford and Ja’brell T. Mumford; one granddaughter, Trakeria D. Mumford, all of the home; one brother, Robert L. Mumford of Florence, SC; one sister, Linda Mumford of Florence, SC; two aunts, Gladys Smoot of Richmond, VA and Elizabeth Alexander of Florence, SC; his mother-in-law, Daisy Mae Johnson of Florence, SC; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy M. Johnson, Margaret M. Johnson, and Gloria (Russell) Anderson, all of Florence, SC; one brother-in-law, Walter D. Lockhart of Florence, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
