Melton Sr, Fred

Mr. Melton, widower of Peggy Sweatt Melton, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Marion and Lena Gardner Melton. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, a charter member of the Hartsville Moose Lodge and a loyal member of the Hartsville Lion‘s Club where he was past president and a past recipient of Lion of the Year. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and Droughon Business College of Columbia, SC. He served in the United States Army during WWII, serving as a medic while stationed in Germany. He was employed for 20 years with the Home Finance Company in Hartsville, was the owner and operator of the Dixie Pig Drive-In for 4 years, and was the owner of Melton‘s Grocery in the Auburn Community until retirement. Surviving are his daughters, Judy (Jerry) Ammons of Hartsville, SC, Brenda (Kim) Cranford of Hartsville, SC, Traci (Harvey) Teal of Hartsville; son, Fred (Susan) Melton, II; sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Chandler Melton; special friend, Betty Andrews; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Melton, Eddie Melton; grandson, Christopher Femal. Funeral services for M. Fred Melton, Sr., 84, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 26, 2010 at Antioch Baptist Church. The Rev. John Helms will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, November 25, 2010 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 1121 Bethlehem Rd.
