The Horry County Police Department has responded to a wrongful death lawsuit brought against the agency.

The lawsuit was filed on June 28 by the family of 66-year-old Sandra Schultz-Peters. The woman died after being struck by a patrol vehicle. She was reportedly sitting in a beach chair set up near the Nash Street beach access at the time.

Duke Brown was the beach patrol safety supervisor who was driving the vehicle at the time. He has since retired from the position.

The complaint named the police department as the only defendant, claiming her death was the result of lax supervision and negligence.

The department’s attorneys have now denied the allegations and asked a judge to dismiss the suit “with prejudice.”
