The sport of break dancing is set to make its Olympic debut on Friday.

Breaking has been an art since the 1970’s, but Paris marks the first time its athletes will freestyle their moves on the world’s biggest stage.

Competitions will be scored by a panel of judges. The competitors must showcase their art and athleticism to spontaneous beats from a DJ. They will be judged on execution, matching movements to the beats and rhythms, originality, technique and their variety and range of movements used throughout the performance.

The two-day competition features competitors from over a dozen countries, including China, France, Japan, the Netherlands, the U.S. and more.

The games are expected to expose breaking to a wider audience.
