A man died while in Lumberton police custody Monday.
Shortly after 3am, police were called to the Royal Farms convenience store on reports of a man acting erratically.
Someone offered to escort the man away while police went inside to speak with employees. The man then returned and began “rolling around on the pavement in front of patrol vehicles.” Officers then requested an ambulance.
When EMS arrived, the man was handcuffed as a safety precaution. He then became unresponsive before being loaded into the ambulance where he was given CPR. He later died at a hospital.
The man’s identity has not been revealed pending next of kin notification.
