National Debt Total Surpasses $35 Trillion Marking Highest In U.S. History

The milestone comes just months after the U.S. surpassed the $34 trillion threshold in early January.

The U.S. national debt total has reached a new record.

The Treasury Department released data Monday which showed the gross national debt hit over $35 trillion. This marks the highest debt recorded in the nation’s history.

The milestone comes just months after the U.S. surpassed the $34 trillion threshold in early January. The $33 trillion mark was reached in September of last year.

In comparison, the national debt hovered around $907 billion only four decades ago.

At this rate, U.S. national debt held by the public is projected to reach 99% of the size of the U.S. gross domestic product this year.
