Israel’s Rescue Of Four Hostages Could Complicate Ceasefire Discussions

While the release of the four hostages is good news, there is still a significant amount of hostages remaining that a ceasefire deal could have released.

An Israeli military assault on Saturday freed four hostages but left 274 Palestinians and one Israeli commando dead.

The hostage rescue has strengthened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s determination to continue pursuing military operations. But, the number of civilian Palestinian casualties could prompt Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar to hit back harder.

The operation will likely complicate U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s efforts to broker a new ceasefire deal.

A senior official said a few of the civilian victims died in the crossfire from Hamas fighters responding to the Israeli operation. A second official said Hamas is ultimately responsible for the Palestinian deaths by hiding hostages in densely populated areas.
