Georgetown County is planning to demolish it’s current detention center.

The current center, which is 28-years-old, will be replaced by a new facility that is expected to cost $67 million.

The new 85,800-square-foot facility will feature three buildings. One will house male inmates with 256 beds and there will be another wing for female inmates with 51 beds.

The third building will be a training center, where inmates will be able to work on various life skills.

Officials said the new facility is expected to open in February of 2027. Once complete, the old center will be demolished.
