House Sends Articles To Senate Regarding Mayorkas Impeachment

The articles aim to force a trial on allegations that Mayorkas has "willfully and systematically" refused to enforce immigration laws.

House Republicans have sent two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate.

The Senate is obligated to hold a trial under the rules of impeachment once the charges are presented by Congress.

The articles aim to force a trial on allegations that Mayorkas has “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce immigration laws.

Earlier this year, the House voted to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Republicans allege he has refused to enforce existing law and also breached public trust by lying to Congress, stating the border was secure.

Democrats are expected to attempt to dismiss or delay the charges before full arguments get underway. However, it is unclear how Democrats plan to proceed.
