American Airlines is relaxing part of its pet policy.
Previously, those who carried a pet into the cabin were only allowed to have one other small item that fit under the seat. Anything bigger such as a carry-on, had to be checked for a $35 fee. The additional baggage fee was added to the $150 fee for the pet totaling to $185.
Now, passengers who bring a pet in the cabin on a flight can also bring a regular carry on bag or a personal item. However, an American Airlines flier can’t travel with both bags. They must choose between one or the other.
The change is expected to reduce the urge for travelers to falsely claim their pet is a service animal that flies for free.
The change also aims to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers who bring their pets.
The new rules took effect late last week.
